Flower Show Schedule

Entries will be accepted on Friday, April 12th from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Late entries maybe accepted on Saturday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. by special permission from the Flower Show Chairman.
In Division I Saintpaulia species only.
In Divisions II, III & IV Saintpaulia maybe used in all classes.

Division I - Horticulture

Section A New World Gesneriads in Flower - Tuberous

Class I Sinningia speciosa species or hybrids (pyloric or
pendant flowers), Other Sinningia species with rosette or upright growth patterns
Other Sinningia hybrids with rosette or upright growth patterns
Other Sinningia species or hybrids with the largest leaf less than 2.5 cm long
Other tuberous gesneriads

Section B New World Gesneriads in Flower - Rhizomatous

Class 2 Smithiantha, Eucodonia, Gloxinia, Achimenes, Kohleria, and other rhizomatous gesneriads

Section C New World Gesneriads in Flower - Fibrous Rooted

Class 3 Codonanthe, XCodonanthus, Columnea (Dalbergaria, Pentadina, Trichantha), Nematanthus, Alsobia, Episcia, Gesneria, and other fibrous-rooted gesneriads

Section E Gesneriads Grown for Ornamental Qualities Other Than Flowers

NO flowers or buds showing color are permitted, but calyces and fruit are allowed. Plants should exhibit some special quality of color, texture or growth pattern to be entered in this section. Variegation means an area lacking chlorophyll: the leaves exhibit white areas. Pale/white leaf veining does not constitute variegation.

This section is for introductions made within the last two years but not previously entered in a regional AVSA or Gesneriad Society show. A card MUST accompany each entry giving information such as name of hybridizer, collector, place of origin, special cultural requirements, etc.

Section G Lesser Known Gesneriads

This section is for gesneriads seldom grown or seen in shows. A card MUST accompany each entry giving information such as habitat, source, special cultural requirements, etc.

Section H Trained or Sculptured Gesneriads

Class 16 Bonsai, topiary, espaliered, or other style

Section I Novice

A novice is one who has not yet won a Best in Class in a Regional AVSA flower show or a blue ribbon in a Gesneriad Society show in a Horticulture Division. A novice may also exhibit plants in other sections.

Class 18 Gesneriads grown for ornamental qualities other than Flowers (no flowers or buds showing color are allowed)

Division II - ARTISTIC

Gesneriads must predominate. No artificial plant material allowed; but other live and dried materials permitted. Accessories are optional. Plant material used should be identified on an accompanying 3" x 5" card. Table covering will be a neutral color. White niches will be provided for Sections 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24. Exhibitors may provide additional draping. Reservations for these sections may be made with barbfestenstein@aol.com or call 585-461-1673. RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY April 7th 2008. All reservations will be confirmed with either a return email or a postcard..

Section J Arrangement of Fresh Cut Gesneriad Material

Class 19 – Paul Ruebens
A lush design using foliage only.
15” High X 12” Wide by 10” Deep

Class 20 The South Seas was the locale of Paul Gauguin’s paintings.
An underwater arrangement not to exceed 12” in any direction.

Section K Arrangement of Growing Gesneriad Material

Class 21 - Georgia O’Keefe
Create a desert like design.
18”H X 15”W X 12”D

Section L Growing Material in a Planting The material must be artistically and horticulturally balanced.

Class 22 Terrarium, straight sided (mirrored back allowed) or curved

Class 23 Tray landscape

Class 24 Other container, not the usual form of plastic or clay pot, but a container garden as opposed to a decorative or novel container.

Section M - Novice (anyone who has never won a Best in Class ribbon in the artistic division of a regional African violet show or a blue ribbon in a Gesneriad Gesneriad show)

Class 25 Artistic entry suitable for any of the classes in Sections J, K, and L. Exhibitor must identify, on a 3" x 5" white card, the name of the class chosen and the plant material used.
Division III - THE ARTS

All entries must feature gesneriads. in some form and have been made by the exhibitor. A card must be submitted to identify material.

Flower Show Rules
1. Entries shall be in accordance with the schedule.

2. Exhibitors are asked to submit their entry list (with exhibitor's name and address, plant names, Sections and Classes) to Irwin Wagman, 52 Harper Drive, Pittsford, NY 14534 or Email: IrwinWag@aol.com by Wednesday, April 2nd. The list can be altered on the entry day, which is Friday April 12th from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Special arrangement must be made with the Flower Show Chairman for late entries.

3. All exhibitors are welcome. However, only a member of the Gesneriad Society may receive the Best in Show Award

4. Where appropriate, educational information should be provided.

5. All entries for competition must be approved by the Classification Committee.

6. An exhibitor is limited to one specimen of the same plant per class in the Horticulture Division. An exhibitor may submit more than one entry per class, provided each entry is a different species, cultivar or hybrid unless otherwise prohibited.

7. Classes may be subdivided or consolidated by the Flower Show Chairman.

8. No entries may be removed from the showroom until the show closes at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 14th, 2008.

9. All plants must be grown by the exhibitor for at least three months prior to the show. This rule does not apply to plant material used in arrangement classes of Division II.

10. All entries will be staged in the showroom by the Placement Committee. Artistic arrangements and collections can be executed in the showroom by the exhibitor in the space designated, and during the stated time for entries. Cut blossoms or plant material maybe placed in artistic arrangements on Saturday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. by previous written arrangement with the Flower Show Chairman.

11 . Exhibitors may indicate the front of a horticultural entry.

12. All plants must be free of insects and disease. All will be inspected, including commercial and educational exhibits as well as entries for exhibit only.

13. Gesneriad Society standard competitive judging will be used. Judging will start at 9:00 a.m. sharp on Saturday, April 13th, 2008.

14. Awards will be made according to the rules set out in the Gesneriad Society Flower Show Manual.
Blue Ribbon is awarded to Best In Class.
(Must have a score of at least 90 points
Red Ribbon is awarded to Second Best in Class
(Must have a score of at least 80 points)
Yellow ribbon is awarded to the Third Best in Class
(Must have a award of at least 70 points)

15. An exhibit must score 90 or above to be considered for Special Awards (rosettes). The Sweepstakes Award for the Horticulture Division and a Sweepstakes award for the Artistic Division based on the number of blue ribbons awarded (no minimum). Number of red ribbons will be used to break ties and number of yellow ribbons if still tied.

16. The award for Best Gesneriad in Show in the Horticulture Division (excluding Saintpaulia) is given for horticultural perfection. A plant must score 95 points or over to be considered for this award.

17. GWNY will endeavor to protect all entries, but assumes no responsibility for loss or damage.

18. Reservations MUST be made in Artistic Division Classes where a niche is indicated and for large Educational or Craft exhibits.

Exhibitor's Information
1) The exhibitor must prepare a list of plants and other exhibits with the appropriate Section and Class numbers to facilitate the Work of the Entries Committee. The Flower Show Committee will assist in identifying material I unknown to the exhibitor. An exhibitor may provide educational information on a white card for any entry in the show for which a card is not a requirement.

2) No particular type of container is specified for the Horticulture Division. Whatever is used should be clean. Foil covering should be avoided. A protective container or transparent cover to shield delicate plant material from dry air or cold drafts may be used if necessary. Covers may be removed for judging.

3) Growing material in situ should present a practical horticultural method of growing, not a temporary insertion for display only. This section covers entries such as terrariums, dish gardens, bonsai and material grown in containers other than the usual plastic or clay pots.

4) Photography is being judged on the skill, technique and composition displayed, not on the quality of the plant material chosen as a subject.

5) Educational exhibits maybe entered by institutions, chapters, study groups, or individuals. Any project relating to gesneriads may be presented with illustrative material that may or may not include live plant material.
