Variegation means an area lacking chlorophyll: the leaves exhibit white areas. Pale/white leaf veining does not constitute variegation.

Division II - ARTISTIC
Gesneriads must predominate. No artificial plant material allowed; but other live and dried materials permitted. Accessories are optional. Plant material used should be identified on an accompanying 3" x 5" card. Table covering will be a neutral color. White niches will be provided for Classes 19 and 21. Exhibitors may provide additional draping. Reservations for these sections may be made with barbfestenstein@aol.com or call 585-461-1673.
RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY April 1st, 2011. All reservations will be confirmed with either a return email or a postcard.
Section J Arrangement of Fresh Cut Gesneriad Material
Class 19 Ca Cl2 Calcium Chloride
One of our most useful compounds. An excellent drying agent, it is used in the paper and pulp industries. Use paper in your design.

In Ancient Greece there were said to be 4 elements. Water, Earth, Fire and Air. Since one of those elements is water, create an underwater design not to exceed 12” in any direction.

Titanium dioxide is extensively used for both house paint and artist’s paints, as it is permanent and has good covering power. Pick a color and create a monochromatic design.

Flower Show Rules
1. Entries shall be in accordance with the schedule.
2. Exhibitors are asked to submit their entry list (with exhibitor's name and address, plant names, Sections and Classes) to Irwin Wagman, 2470 East Avenue, Apt 607, Rochetser, NY 14610 or Email:IrwinWag@aol.com by Wednesday, March 30. The list can be altered on the entry day, which is Friday April 1st from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.. Special arrangement must be made with the Flower Show Chairman for late entries.
3. All exhibitors are welcome.
4. Where appropriate, educational information should be provided.
5. All entries for competition must be approved by the Classification Committee.
6. An exhibitor is limited to one specimen of the same plant per class in the Horticulture Division. An exhibitor may submit more than one entry per class, provided each entry is a different species, cultivar or hybrid unless otherwise prohibited.
7. Classes may be subdivided or consolidated by the Flower Show Chairman after entries close.
8. No entries may be removed from the showroom until the show closes at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 3rd, 2011.
9. All plants must be grown by the exhibitor for at least three months prior to the show. This rule does not apply to plant material used in arrangement classes of Division 11.
10. All entries will be staged in the showroom by the Placement Committee. Artistic arrangements and collections can be executed in the showroom by the exhibitor in the space designated, and during the stated time for entries. Cut blossoms or plant material maybe placed in artistic arrangements on Saturday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. by previous written arrangement with the Flower Show Chairman.
11. Exhibitors may indicate the front of a horticultural entry.
12. All plants must be free of insects and disease. All will be inspected, including commercial and educational exhibits as well as entries for exhibit only.
13. The Gesneriad Society standard competitive judging will be used. Judging will start at 8:00 a.m. sharp on Saturday, April 2nd, 2011.
14. Awards will be made according to The Gesneriad Society’s point scores: 1st, blue ribbon (90 – 100), 2nd, red ribbon (80 – 89), 3rd, yellow ribbon (70 – 79).
15. An exhibit must score 90 or above to be considered for Special Awards (rosettes). Two additional awards will be Best in Design and a Best in Arts.
16. The award for Best Gesneriad in Show in the Horticulture Division (excluding Saintpaulia) is given for horticultural perfection. A plant must score 95 points or over to be considered for this award. BIS award is given only to members of The Gesneriad Society or members of Gesneriad-Dicts of Western NY.
17. GWNY will endeavor to protect all entries, but assumes no responsibility for loss or damage.
18. Reservations MUST be made in Artistic Division Classes where a niche is indicated and for large Educational or Craft exhibits.
Exhibitor's Information
1) The exhibitor must prepare a list of plants and other exhibits with the appropriate Section and Class numbers to facilitate the Work of the Entries
The Flower Show Committee will assist in identifying material unknown to the exhibitor. An exhibitor may provide educational information on a white card for any entry in the show for which a card is not a requirement.
2) No particular type of container is specified for the Horticulture Division. Whatever is used should be clean. Foil covering should be avoided. A protective container or transparent cover to shield delicate plant material from dry air or cold drafts may be used if necessary. Covers may be removed for judging.
3) Growing material in situ should present a practical horticultural method of growing, not a temporary insertion for display only. This section covers entries such as terrariums, dish gardens, bonsai and material grown in containers other than the usual plastic or clay pots.
4) Photography is being judged on the skill, technique and composition displayed, not on the quality of the plant material chosen as a subject.
5) Educational exhibits maybe entered by institutions, chapters, study groups, or individuals. Any project relating to gesneriads may be presented with illustrative material that may or may not include live plant material.
